Tula was started by a husband and wife team, Ula and Mike. Who started carrying with their first child developed the Tula after their second child was born. Tula started small and grew to one of the biggest carrier companies in the babywearing industry.
Description of Carrier
The Tula is a SSC (soft structure baby carrier). With a panel that baby sits in and supports their upper body, 2 padded straps that fasten from the side of the panel to the top of the panel, which the wearer places their arms in similar to a rucksack bag. The bottom of the carrier has a firm padded waistband that fastens together with a pair of large sturdy buckles. The straps have one way adjustments, which can be tightened by pull downwards and 2 perfect fit adjustors on the front where the panel meets the strap to bring baby closer to the wearer. The waistband is also one way fastening and is contoured for a comfortable fit. There is a strap buckle which is used to keep the carrier from slipping of the shoulders. There is also the advantage of legs out padding. All topped of with material that is 100% oeko-tex standard certified.
Tula’s style is very distinctive with striking patterned panels. The seat darts in the panel allow the bottom to sink lower into the carrier, creating an ergonomic M position. The fabrics are canvas, so the wear and tear of the carrier is amazing, 100% machine washable and washes well.
The carrier can be used from birth (when using the infant insert, which can be purchased separately). The carriers come in 2 sizes ‘baby and toddler’. The baby carrier panel measures 15.5 inches tall and 15 inches wide at the seat, each strap measures 20 inches when not expanded and 23 when expanded with additional webbing to increase to 29 inches. In comparison, the toddler size panel is 17.5 inches tall and 18.5 inches wide at the seat. The straps measure 18 inches when not expanded and 21 inches when expanded. The webbing will increase this to 29 inches. The waist band will fit from 27 – 57 inch waist.
The baby carrier will fit a child weighing 15 – 45lbs and the toddler carrier will fit 25-60lbs
The baby carriers can be expanded further to suit and older child with the help of the Tula ‘free to grow’ inserts (which can be purchased separately).
What We Liked
Apart from the Tula being really pretty, in a back carry its super comfy, the waist band distributes the weight onto my hips and I do not get any pulling or discomfort in my shoulders. The wide panel means it’s really roomy for my daughter and the legs out padding fit perfectly into my little ones knee-pits. She has been comfortable and happy to go in this carrier every time.
What We Disliked
The straps are fixed and cannot be swapped to cross when in a front carry, meaning, for me, it was hugely uncomfortable, pulling on my shoulders and causing an ache in my lower back very quickly. It’s worth noting though that my daughter is 15 months and 22lbs and I have a short torso and sloped shoulders so, for me personally, this exaggerates where my centre of gravity is and causes the discomfort. This is not something that will happen with everyone and you shoulder try any carrier out first before purchasing.
I love Tula, I think they have really given loads of thought into their carriers, both in terms of ergonomics but also in style and aesthetics too. There ethos on companies all charging the same amount, (so no-one can be undercut in price) is something that really shows to me they want to make the carrier not only accessible for all, but also so that smaller retailers have just as much chance to sell as a larger one, its an ethos that resounds with me a lot.
Pricing is relative to others in the same class, at around £100 is very reasonable. They hold their value and you will get a good 75-90% back if you look after the carrier and sell it on pre-loved. The fact it washes up so well and the fabric they are made with are consistently known for their longevity means it will look as good as new for a long time. Safety tested for a parent’s peace of mind we give this carrier a double thumb up!
